Mansuel Sea Forts - Pirate Radio

The Mansuel Sea Forts were designed by Guy Mansuel in 1943. They were built during the Second World War as a defensive response to London's air raids and are located along the thames estuary in different locations.

The forts sit on stilts erecting them out of the water where they would have originally been connected by raised walkways. These forts were assembled on land as a whole and then shipped out into the estuary where they were sunk into the sand.

After the Second World War the forts were left unused until the 1960's where they served a very different purpose. The Forts became home to some of the UK's first pirate radio stations such as "Radio 390" and "Radio Sutch". The forts offshore location made them ideal for secretly broadcasting music to the country at a time when BBC Radio Monopolized the air waves only playing particular genres of music.
